One<div>Yes, it's time for the "pretties" :) Or as Paul calls it, the "details" :) We're both right! To pick up where I left off in my last post with the mudding/sanding/drywalling...</div><br /><div>Even though Paul wasn't quite finished with the sanding and mudding ( he still had several corners to do, and the bullnose, which was the rounded corners I chose), we decided to have Paul's parents come up to help us. Because Paul has the best parents, they were soooo extremely gracious to offer up their services to us in the phase: the tile, floor laying phase. Paul's dad had laid tile before so he had experience, though he had no clue what was in his future:) (Yes, I chose slate tile, subway tile and brick to be laid, all of which he had never done! As you will see in my next post he did a gorgous job!) We all determined that Paul could finish up the mudding stuff while his dad worked on the tile laying. Good plan and for the most part worked out beautifully.</div><br /><div>Painting was also involved which kind of rushed me. Let me just say, that picking out the paint colors was the hardest thing for me! I am sooo indecisive!!! I was poring over magazines, internet pics and people's homes just trying to think of the best colors for mine. It was actually not that fun! Not only the paint colors, but which brand? Also, should we go for the way more expensive low VOC version of the more expensive or less expensive brand? And should we get ceiling white or another white color? Because I have a large and open kitchen/dining/living area should I "separate" each room with it's own color or make it all flow with the same? I'm telling you there were a million other questions we asked ourselves and I dreamt about. But we finally decided! So here is a quick rundown:</div><br /><br /><div>We chose Valspar paint and mostly colors, with the boys rooms, mudroom, master bedroom, kid's bathroom and under-the-stairs reading room having the low VOC paint. Here are the colors:</div><br /><div>Master bedroom/bathroom - Valspar's White Smoke<br />Kid's bathroom - Valspar's Cabin Plank</div><br /><div>Mudroom - Olympic's Limish ( I matched it as closely as I could to a mudroom bench I bought last year)</div><br /><div>Kitchen/dining/living/library/halls/closets - Valspar's Suisse Coffee</div><br /><div>Boy's rooms - Valspar's "something" Gray ( I can't remember!!)</div><br /><div>Under-the-stairs reading room - Valspar's Ruby Red</div><br /><div>And ceilings? Yes, just plain old Ceiling White! Paul would have killed me if I picked colored ceilings or something. I thought I would be nice.</div><br /><div>So, back to Paul's parents. They got here June 13th and pretty much started straight away painting the kid's bathroom<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP7XN9i4Jz0K5LJ9pEMqjdidNg6gX5Cv4Vk4xmq45xv-xFwv5-poblXGm-yIFnHPrXniwNTxSPdwYboRJAhiAAVv_5-b1JwAfEn5pt56uLO42PjGWJljxiEhScRrgNMbDW2S7czzEda1Mf/s1600/100_2755.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626336306867456658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP7XN9i4Jz0K5LJ9pEMqjdidNg6gX5Cv4Vk4xmq45xv-xFwv5-poblXGm-yIFnHPrXniwNTxSPdwYboRJAhiAAVv_5-b1JwAfEn5pt56uLO42PjGWJljxiEhScRrgNMbDW2S7czzEda1Mf/s400/100_2755.JPG" /></a>. And here's a pic! We will be having white beadboard halfway up the walls, also. The painting needed to be done before Paul's Dad laid the tile. We got one coat paint, but realized that the semi gloss paint we got showed roller streaks pretty badly, so we ended up doing two coats (actually, thanks to the Ewer's for that!!) As I said, here's a picture of the one coat.<br /><br /><br /></div><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbNwdCEaWwKf3hRd4A4fyxsXqka0rFRnx406MH0xzXncVB0XITY6C-NyjdWd3GKoJNij9Y3IoEVXrSHoj97mQnDZOEAMIs_H6B-cYpsI8Mxvn-2cr8XsVUif9umX9qKLWYvRjzydME5EID/s1600/100_2744.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626336312147862242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbNwdCEaWwKf3hRd4A4fyxsXqka0rFRnx406MH0xzXncVB0XITY6C-NyjdWd3GKoJNij9Y3IoEVXrSHoj97mQnDZOEAMIs_H6B-cYpsI8Mxvn-2cr8XsVUif9umX9qKLWYvRjzydME5EID/s400/100_2744.JPG" /></a></div><br /><br /><div>Here is a picture of the tile. I just texted Paul to ask him what brand and color name the tile was and he told me "brown" hehe:) I'll have to get the tile name. It is 12x12 from Lowe's. A ceramic tile that we found discounted from $1.29 to $0.78 a sf. Great savings! I overestimated the sf and we were able to take three boxes back. Those litle white things in between each tile piece are spacers, used to measure the exact distance between each piece so it comes out perfectly. We used the 1/4" spacers, but they can go up to 2" However wide apart you want!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyauCU7Ue6NmZfbCEdovV07rPmlaCHbyyLyL5yDphmWzpRTGs_7DOVwMPwtoQoDDri_-o6rEhtyCnZBOrXkkB2KW-juneXRD-B-7Wrzzlq2K1I2PYzaHAuoxMUZiBY1QNT4rNxmyhkcdOm/s1600/100_2746.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626336324940073954" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyauCU7Ue6NmZfbCEdovV07rPmlaCHbyyLyL5yDphmWzpRTGs_7DOVwMPwtoQoDDri_-o6rEhtyCnZBOrXkkB2KW-juneXRD-B-7Wrzzlq2K1I2PYzaHAuoxMUZiBY1QNT4rNxmyhkcdOm/s400/100_2746.JPG" /></a></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>And now a picture of the inlaw laying the tile! Hard, hard work! His poor knees!! He did a fantastic job though. After he was through laying the tile he had to grout it (which is the colored cement stuff you see between the tile). I wanted a white to brighten up the room, but Paul warned me against it seeing as it would be hard to keep clean, so we came to a comprimise! :) We chose a bone color (light brown) instead. The grout in and of itself is a process! It takes a while to dry, but as you can see in the last picture, it came out beautifully:) Thank you so much, Dad Edes!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>As of today, we are much further ahead than this. We have laid all the tile and brick flooring as well as the subway tile in the master bath. The mudroom, masterbedroom/bath is also painted. All the ceilings are orange peeled (lightly textured) and mostly primered. This week we will be finishing up the painting and then begins the wood flooring next! Yippee! :) I will be posting the rest of the pictures on my next blog post. So....stay tuned!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR6j3WJOq78FctAAl24dSb11SOQIeEwkeCsNH-Oz3LPnpbOgblRLoTMnTdhhYlOMKhWyJJu2q0yB2TkaUxoLNE4d-FgKPPswXknXtFiUkiItd2o2AybKSVzgyNcpm3Rke3xnP2h51-Lv08/s1600/SN853020.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626336332939912546" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR6j3WJOq78FctAAl24dSb11SOQIeEwkeCsNH-Oz3LPnpbOgblRLoTMnTdhhYlOMKhWyJJu2q0yB2TkaUxoLNE4d-FgKPPswXknXtFiUkiItd2o2AybKSVzgyNcpm3Rke3xnP2h51-Lv08/s400/SN853020.JPG" /></a></div><br /><br /><div>On to build,</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Rachael</div></div>A Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-14343587143999949642011-06-29T06:53:00.000-07:002011-06-29T20:35:06.151-07:00Processes and PatienceSeems like so many things in homebuilding take a long time, usually from waiting. Waiting for loans to go through, waiting for subs to call back, waiting for orders to come in, waiting for good weather. And while it does teach us patience, it also teaches us that good things can't be rushed. It takes time to do something right. Hurrying through a project or a process will only mess it up. I have learned this a thousand times over these last few months.
<br />
<br />
<br /><div>After we completed the insulation in March, I thought, "Yes, the sheetrock and then the mudding and then only a few weeks till we move in. Definitely be in by June!" Har, har, har. That was the biggest laugh of the century :) In my peewee brain, I thought that surely my hubby will be able to get the sheetrock/mudding done in a couple of weeks. My poor hubby, trying to live up to my unbelievable expectations!! THIS is where those processes and patience came into play. (I have to pause and insert that this post will be mostly a brag book on Paul :))
<br />
<br />
<br /><div>We bought our sheetrock and it began! Fun. Fun. Paul began the arduous journey in the middle of March of being a one-man team of sheetrock hangers. After working 12 hour night shifts, he would usually come home and sleep for four hours, get up and head over to the land and work. Two things were a blessing. First, Paul's work allowed him to borrow their sheetrock lifter; a handy red device that lifts sheetrock against the ceiling and holds it there so it can be nailed in. And secondly was the people who came and helped, namely Joel Franks and Nate Shaver. Thanks guys! I can't say there wasn't a time or two where I helped hold sheetrock against the wall, but I was always excusing myself so I didn't do that too much :)
<br />
<br />I won't go into all the details of drudgery, lack of sleep, moments (or hours) of doubt and other such things, but I will say Paul finished with the sheetrock in six weeks. Hanging, that is. And the Lord was good and allowed us to have enough left over to finish the upstairs (which we won't do until later). During that time we ordered the wood flooring! We hadn't quite settled on a place to get it from. We looked at Lowe's, discount flooring stores, upscale flooring stores, online and finally decided to order it online. I searched and searched and searched online, read reviews, did comparisons and came upon <a href="http://www.simplefloors.com/">http://www.simplefloors.com/</a> a wonderful website specializing in laminate, hardwood, engineered wood and tile flooring. Paul and I had decided beforehand to do a medium color hardwood instead of engineered wood. Nothing against engineered, I just absolutely love hardwood. It has character, ages well and needs less upkeep. A medium color, because, well, because it hides dirt! You may call me lazy, but hey! :) We ordered 1200 square feet of Honey Oak, 6 inch wide reclaimed wood planks that are 7 feet long, with thresholds and stair thingies (he he). It came with padding attached and weighed over three thousand pounds!! That was a very scary decision. I kept second guessing myself (of course!) and ordered a bunch of samples before, looked at tons of pictures and read what others wrote about their Honey Oak flooring. It got great reviews and it was only $3.69 a sf. The flooring came just one week later on a huge flatbed truck and the nicest truck driver helped Paul carry all that flooring upstairs to be stored until we needed it. So nice! Can't wait to see what it looks like down!!
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<br /><div>So, now we come to the mudding. Another huge, massive process that I was determined would only take two weeks and instead took almost eight. In fact, Paul is finishing up the large room, mudding the butt joints and the flats. It's his last coat on those and then he will be sanding it. On my next post, I will have pictures of finished rooms that we completed so we could lay the flooring. It's starting to come together, but if it wasn't for loads of patience (whether we wanted to be patient or not) we would have pulled our hair out. The Lord is good and I will be the first to admit that I had my moments! But with the end in sight it is clearer and these are the moments we have been waiting for. Let's just say we will never build a house again! lol :)
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />Sorry for the long wait between posts, but who wants to read over and over again about hanging and mudding sheetrock? :)</div>
<br />
<br />With things happening fast, be prepared to look at lots of pictures. On that note, take a look at my slideshow I put together up at the top. From the beginning to the end (or almost!) it is the account of our journey:) Enjoy!!</div>

My hubster is putting up the first part of the vinyl...the whatchamacallit! Yeah, I know, I can't remember what it's called. *sigh* But! I do know it's what our lovely vinyl siding will sit on so he can start the process:) I seriously had been STRESSING over the color of our vinyl. I wanted a barn red color with white trim and gray accents. Instead of going with a more expensive vinyl that was the exact color I wanted ( about $2000 more) we decided to go with a less expensive version called "Lighthouse Red". The sample was perfecto, but Oh Boy, when we got the actual vinyl in...well, let's just say I was freaking out. To put it mildly. Haha. I know, man am I carnal to care that much about what color our house is. Well, after my first (and only!) freakout session, my dear, calm hubby told me that we were going to put it up no matter what color it was and that I better get over it! Well, that worked! We had had to special order it and because of that, there was no turning back. I just prayed it would look beautiful on our house. And as you will see from our pictures, it is more gorgeous than I even imagined! It looks so stunning surrounded by woods:) Thank you, Jesus, for caring for me in the most menial, unnecesary things! Well, now for the process!<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrzhH0c0vjI5odtcrzXsA1XcijE8h1ftvQbDtl5wpkdIE9nQBbQvu7EPOt_Y3sSrsk09oNKYrXkOy21QXglJhhQUR_GaQ9jntNTDIkJQRwLXfDzhmVBHaal7wizmcCSqTJK1lPI0stVaF-/s1600/100_2391.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583042064426092658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrzhH0c0vjI5odtcrzXsA1XcijE8h1ftvQbDtl5wpkdIE9nQBbQvu7EPOt_Y3sSrsk09oNKYrXkOy21QXglJhhQUR_GaQ9jntNTDIkJQRwLXfDzhmVBHaal7wizmcCSqTJK1lPI0stVaF-/s400/100_2391.JPG" /></a> Here is the first piece. The coloring is off (it looks kind of purple here) because of the overcast skies so don't let that "cloud" your judgment. Hehehe, I am so punny. The good thing about vinyl is that it goes on super fast, if you know what you're doing. Paul is so smart that he knows everything really about building, so this was not a problem for him. </div><div> </div><div>Here's a rundown of the type of vinyl we got. We chose Crane Exterior Portfolio siding. Great prices and a lot of choices. We did not get insulated siding. It would have been an awesome thing, but we honestly didn't have a budget for it, so we have to rely on our housewrap, which does a pretty decent job. We got the Dutch Lap style of siding. This gives it a wood texture as well as a decorative edge. It's supposed to not make the vinyl wavy. So, it's a good thing:) The color choice we went with is a Lighthouse Red. If for any reason you want to go to Crane's website you can follow their links and design your own exterior of a home. It was pretty neat! I had fun doing it! Haha<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh125AY0UhEk6g_dj8SXDDRc5fbPtZL_VFkwgTM3oZQKdy3E7gwB6BzoJNYBXacNY5kpbbaY5PwzHbisPB7sai1Qj6ic21KrRFWuiwN27qnf4rfarlWVoxO9tND5sk1_hTliYJ3uIEs3wXp/s1600/100_2392.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583042054672901618" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh125AY0UhEk6g_dj8SXDDRc5fbPtZL_VFkwgTM3oZQKdy3E7gwB6BzoJNYBXacNY5kpbbaY5PwzHbisPB7sai1Qj6ic21KrRFWuiwN27qnf4rfarlWVoxO9tND5sk1_hTliYJ3uIEs3wXp/s400/100_2392.JPG" /></a><br />Here's the first piece going up. Lots of measuring invloved and cutting with special scissors. See how far the first piece is already from the ground? Yeah, that's not so great. The second piece in Paul was already on the ladders. I really don't know when he gets 20 feet up what he's going to do, but we shall see. I'll be there to catch him if he falls!<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhldz40JFq_-wCc23iB4K3bHJB-84lXpzvi9i5r8GqhnrSnuW63jVVYA0_sgWKzU37rWLhMQ9LodVF2J-t1ySDhhLFA-ss4yNa2p3TPj27SOnRsXWiaFHc6MORgOTXH3Si0pOTFVcAkDw9G/s1600/100_2448.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583042052003877554" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhldz40JFq_-wCc23iB4K3bHJB-84lXpzvi9i5r8GqhnrSnuW63jVVYA0_sgWKzU37rWLhMQ9LodVF2J-t1ySDhhLFA-ss4yNa2p3TPj27SOnRsXWiaFHc6MORgOTXH3Si0pOTFVcAkDw9G/s400/100_2448.JPG" /></a> The bay is done! Isn't it amazing? I LOVE the white trim and soffit! This was very hard to do, sliding in 3 1/2" pieces of vinyl between the windows and trim. All that cutting! But Paul did a very good job. His goal that day was to get the vinyl done over there on the right hand side of the door. Do you see that gray little thing on the side of the house? That is the connector thingy for the electricians to run their wiring from the electrical pole to the house. They need vinyl siding up and insulation inside to run the wiring. As soon as they run the wiring then we have electricity to our home! Paul was not able to get it done that day, but I believe it was the next day (the 2nd or 3rd of March) that Nick Lundy came over and they were able to get it done.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJmDBJwlVw1k_efEXpn8tPzxEegxI46yzL2nR0Bi0zKg7sGFMG11jA1q0MOYKWqj7sXoCYe4urNVywYOYFpUdNuLYw69RD1VnGMYf1B5nn1RIrDLzAzgCSf5vUO8FkgNSINpyO-2-nrPxQ/s1600/100_2458.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583042045582626450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJmDBJwlVw1k_efEXpn8tPzxEegxI46yzL2nR0Bi0zKg7sGFMG11jA1q0MOYKWqj7sXoCYe4urNVywYOYFpUdNuLYw69RD1VnGMYf1B5nn1RIrDLzAzgCSf5vUO8FkgNSINpyO-2-nrPxQ/s400/100_2458.JPG" /></a> Here's the picture! We haven't done any more because the weather has been terrible! So Paul has been hanging sheetrock. I think it will be fabulous once it's all done. I can't wait to landscape and get some sod down on the ground so it doesn't look so terrible outside! But this is it folks:) Let me know what you think of the color! </div><div> </div><div>I'll be posting some more in the next couple of days, because there has been A LOT going on. We only have a few more months till we're supposed to be done, but more than that amount of work. Paul is contemplating staying out at the house until the sheetrock is done. I mean, people, living out there! But right now, we are at whatever it takes. :) And as long as I keep the big picture in mind, I'm okay!</div><div> </div><div>Thanks to those who are praying and following:) Keep praying and keep following!</div><div> </div><div>On to build,</div><div> </div><div>Rachael<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div><div></div></div></div></div>A Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-17241578938453343512011-02-14T13:30:00.001-08:002011-02-14T14:26:36.795-08:00Too Good to be TrueA reprieve has been taken. House building is back in full swing. Praise the Lord for that! We have been fighting through so many things to get back on track. Paul's work has been having him work quite a bit of overtime...great money, lousy opportunities to be building. Church has been uber busy...definitely a good thing! And I've been a terrible wife...way too clingy these last few months! Yikes! I begged Paul probably 25 times to hire a builder to finish the rest, but my stubborn, hardworking, thrifty hubby would have none of it. And I'm glad! Well, now I am ;)<br /><br />As much as I hate to talk about weather (I absolutely can't stand it! heehee), it has been playing an extremely important role in our<br /><br />1) building opportunities<br />2) motivation<br /><br />It's been snowing and icing like crazy and hillbillies that we were decided to build our house on an incline, with our driveway coming off another incline. So, there goes weeks of accomplishing absolutely nothing!<br /><div align="right"><br />This pic is of my hubby doing soffit work on our bay.<br />Let's just say the angles were a BEAR! So we stocked up and made them go out to our land and unload it. We're so bad! hehehe:) It gave Paul the opportunity to do some inside work while the weather was bad outside. It took Paul roughly 3 weeks to finish all the insulation. He started with the exterior walls (using R-13 insulation). Then went to the ceilings (using R-30). Then he and my bro-in-law, Joel, did ALL the interior walls in one day (using R-11). I asked Paul what all the numbers meant and he said that the higher the number the denser the insulation and more weather/soundproof it is. Me being a complete doofus, asked him why we didn't use the highest insulation (R-30) for ALL the walls/ceilings. You know, so it will be ultra weather/soundproof! Right?? That's a lovely idea, he said, but kind of pointless seeing as it's kind of pointless. Oh, okay... :) <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOK4R6Lalbv8LwRTzbAx0k8AnKmIepyQ7cLS1gs4yF2ViTP5P5dazz6MISWugoQmJoZgCbHtRd8jGJgSeuw7gD2K-5fxNcTAEfa9WSeTCGc7zSGwZwy69genQjo4y0IIPGJavu1l29ewEg/s1600/100_2258.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573663478640648354" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOK4R6Lalbv8LwRTzbAx0k8AnKmIepyQ7cLS1gs4yF2ViTP5P5dazz6MISWugoQmJoZgCbHtRd8jGJgSeuw7gD2K-5fxNcTAEfa9WSeTCGc7zSGwZwy69genQjo4y0IIPGJavu1l29ewEg/s400/100_2258.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Other than the insulation, Paul has been doing odd and end stuff ~sweeping, framing fireplaces, hiring new plumbers (! a WHOLE other story), and finishing the soffit work on our window. We need to hurry and get the window done so we can start our siding. Hoping and praying that we can start doing that this Friday! Yippee!<br /><br />Let me tell you a quick praise:) The Lord is good! But we have been pricing sheetrock from other companies because our supply company would have to special order it. Lowe's had the cheapest, but our total sheetrock bill would come to about $2500...*gulp*. We were hoping to spend only $2000. Sheetrock prices have been going up apparently. Well, my hubs decided to give our supply company a call (Lewis Hill Sales, btw) and see what it would cost to special order it. Lo and behold, they beat Lowe's prices by almost $2.00 a sheet!!! Oh my word!!! Our total bill would be only $1500!!! I don't know how they do it, but they do it! I'm soooo glad we called. It goes to show you, no matter WHAT you think in home building on your own, there will always be surprises and ALWAYS make that phone call. Seriously!<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWN-yV1y530kWOrneHhffmvALJciy0DuO7uLGBFCPh0z-sIJe23Vx1W6r6XA4zNhXxpgovBzPomk7knFA1PqhBVmNTalj5dP3pTuq_OqSHXKVfAFefoP-JHFzMgv1mrBHKLNagm5I-hhpz/s1600/100_2251.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573663474984597218" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWN-yV1y530kWOrneHhffmvALJciy0DuO7uLGBFCPh0z-sIJe23Vx1W6r6XA4zNhXxpgovBzPomk7knFA1PqhBVmNTalj5dP3pTuq_OqSHXKVfAFefoP-JHFzMgv1mrBHKLNagm5I-hhpz/s400/100_2251.JPG" /></a><br />That concludes what has happened in the last three months! Oh well.<br /></div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">Hope you are enjoying your life, because, friends, I am enjoying mine! It's not easy!!! There are many reasons...the inlaw's two week visit, my lack of internet accesibility for the last week, and then the big one: just plain "slumpiness"! Yes, I made up that word to describe my feeling of, well...slumpiness. Both Paul and I have gone through a slump of not wanting to do ANYTHING that's related to our new home! No working on it, no talking about it, no picking things out. Not even my fave - online shopping! Now, that's bad:) I don't know why or what caused it. But either way that's how we felt.<br /><br /><div><div><div><div>Now that didn't mean we didn't get stuff done. In fact, we got a lot done. Mostly Paul did, but I was able to get some things accomplished. My only condition was that it had to be fun haha:) So, while my mil was here we went accessory shopping! It was sooo much fun. I honestly hadn't done hardly anything when it came to picking out the inside furniture/accessories of our home. We went to thrift stores, antique stores, Ikea. We really had the best time. But I definitely have to tell you about our Ikea trip. My mom, sister, mom in law and I all took an overnight trip to Cincinnati, OH so we could spend a day shopping at Ikea. It was a great plan and I'm sooo glad it worked out. My hubby "watched" the kids while he worked on the house so that we didn't have to take the chillins with us. It would have been torture for them AND us if they had come! So, Oct 29th and 30th found us in north country! We had the BEST fellowship and fun! We stayed in a great hotel near the store and we got right in and checked in. We knew Ikea closed soon, but we decided to go and have a quick look through so we could get our bearings and be right on our way the next day. We spent about 30 minutes there and then came back to the hotel. We stayed up and played a game of Scrabble! About 11:00 we decided to go to bed. Wellllll...as I'm sure most of you know my dear sissy is preggo and she has a hard time sleeping. That night was about to get pretty bad for her! hahahaha. Sorry, I just have to laugh. It's one of those things that hindsight makes hilarious! (don't tell her, but I laughed quietly as soon as she told us what had happened!!) Anyways, I'm sure ALL of you know of a midget wrestling team called The Half Pint Brawlers. Right? Not! I'd absolutely never heard of them, but apparently they think they're something because they were in the room right next to us ha<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisInSbknbTeiDy4MeYCFwB7ZqzJwwGheb3m1reeHYEoZR7BMJUEadchc1NOQIKhYN-PQ0DZ3nFE3sMLVqCxEoES_AONPvTbQ9ZOcVK9sOgx7eG2awQB2moYke3uafjlVksj3F4n03RpCEt/s1600/0096424_PE236038_S4%255B1%255D.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 297px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 231px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541095567577903250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisInSbknbTeiDy4MeYCFwB7ZqzJwwGheb3m1reeHYEoZR7BMJUEadchc1NOQIKhYN-PQ0DZ3nFE3sMLVqCxEoES_AONPvTbQ9ZOcVK9sOgx7eG2awQB2moYke3uafjlVksj3F4n03RpCEt/s400/0096424_PE236038_S4%255B1%255D.jpg" /></a>ving the best time doing whatever midget wrestlers do ALL NIGHT LONG! My sister called front desk numerous times to complain and finally went to the front to ask for some peace and quiet. I won't go into detail about what happened (!) but the hotel was kind enough to give us that night's stay free of charge and to apologize about the wrestling team's behavior. I saw one of the wrestlers<span></span> the next morning and he looked pretty out of it! It was pretty interesting to say the least. Google them and see what you see:) Kind of weird!</div><div></div><div>Anyhow, we went shopping the whole next day and had the best time! I was able to find my kitchen sink, my bathroom sink (shown here), the boys's bed (shown) which we will be putting a mattress on bottom also, a massive closet organizer for the boys, rugs, most of my lighting and a bu<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmiUfis3ocwPDvBzlM-Ngoa1z_Ipvdew46YSYbrZb_VwbfW_NzQ4oGBb3ohQv3OdgNfWa0dX5p8we5xA62qsCT27666jtV6yZ2ELBtKEoBc50M0cHw6ix9fus4069KKGztkDvJBLBXaoR0/s1600/3nf3p23o75Y45Z45Q1a7j657fc5efc93716c1%255B1%255D.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 250px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 250px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541095571030156578" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmiUfis3ocwPDvBzlM-Ngoa1z_Ipvdew46YSYbrZb_VwbfW_NzQ4oGBb3ohQv3OdgNfWa0dX5p8we5xA62qsCT27666jtV6yZ2ELBtKEoBc50M0cHw6ix9fus4069KKGztkDvJBLBXaoR0/s400/3nf3p23o75Y45Z45Q1a7j657fc5efc93716c1%255B1%255D.jpg" /></a>nch of accessories. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6iG7LiTGpwc7VK5UyIRCyG5ccwcNPkHYnPkb6MxYkvf-zmVvlvn81KCT8hKIUaGHPEptfkN24r_dnLaNoz8PmT5bPtjTBGuG9QmfwtLuPP2RIODidfCgpc7NWQYFPSAFYipJMpwO9mdrd/s1600/100_1990.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 261px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 221px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541095582404216066" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6iG7LiTGpwc7VK5UyIRCyG5ccwcNPkHYnPkb6MxYkvf-zmVvlvn81KCT8hKIUaGHPEptfkN24r_dnLaNoz8PmT5bPtjTBGuG9QmfwtLuPP2RIODidfCgpc7NWQYFPSAFYipJMpwO9mdrd/s400/100_1990.JPG" /></a>The receipt was quite long! Thank you, Lord, for helping us fit all that stuff in our car. I was so worried it wouldn't fit. In fact, there were things I couldn't get because of room, but Paul and I will be going back to get our cabinets and other things. I'm looking forward to that.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><br />While we were having a blast shopping, the men were back at home working hard. Paul's dad and he both put up the soffit by themselves and that honestly took almost three days. They stained the front door, framed in the fireplace and bought the vinyl siding (that's another story for another day). All this while they watched the kids (that's another story I won't tell! heehee) Let's just say, Praise God for keeping ALL of them safe:)</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><br />As you can see I have been focusing mostly on fun stuff. We found some great bargains (a mudroom storage bench 75% off (thanks, Kay for finding this!!), an antique armoire that will fit perfectly in our bathroom, a cool antique steamer trunk with drawers and original papering($25) and several other things). I also was introduced to a fantastic website that I can't wait to show you. Longer post :) :)<br /><br /><br />Sometimes I'll pinch myself. Mostly that happens when I'm driving up the drive to our future home and the leaves on the trees are brilliant orange and red and I can see through them to where we hope to spend the rest of our lives. Sometimes it'll happen when I've found exactly what I've been looking for for a bathroom sink or outside light sconces and the prices can't be beat. It happens when I see my hardworking hubby putting shingles on the roof or the electricians running wire to our recessed lighting. Sometimes I just can't believe it's happening...to me! But, by God's grace, it is.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGd65Wpy2EvZALRoYXzgrAjaw5YKUW24lER12zLmfkLtbbk5XBUINigyN0TRKKwfCq-wt51xJJW66N7KBvIQW_UZ1ajoO51lk59-y9n3CZCSs8gFvuCCSeenmueK4ezaU8HnkxOrWBpWYd/s1600/NB-console.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 350px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 396px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526883923256241362" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGd65Wpy2EvZALRoYXzgrAjaw5YKUW24lER12zLmfkLtbbk5XBUINigyN0TRKKwfCq-wt51xJJW66N7KBvIQW_UZ1ajoO51lk59-y9n3CZCSs8gFvuCCSeenmueK4ezaU8HnkxOrWBpWYd/s400/NB-console.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Everything house-wise is soooo new to me. I get ecstatic when I see a big ball of wire sitting on the floor, just knowing that that will be used to give the study light so I can see when I'm playing the piano. Those electricians must think me wacko because I couldn't stop hanging around taking pictures and asking ridiculous question! Like, "Should I put a pendant between that stud or that stud?"<br /><br />"Ma'am, it's wherever you want it."<br /><br />*sigh* "I know, but where would the BEST place be?" And then Paul has to intervene to make the executive decision. I just can't seem to make up my mind! Now don't laugh, you'd be doing the same thing!<br /><br /><br />This week the subs were here. Not the sandwiches, mind you, but the workers. The electricians and the plumbers. Today the HVAC guy is doing his thing, but because he's not done, I'm not writing about him yet:) We've had quite a time getting a hold of our plumber. Evidently he doesn't have a voicemail and he rarely answers his phone (in fact, I don't know how we got a hold of him in the first place!). We had several things to talk to him about. When our septic guy was done he was very adamant about getting a septic line run from the house to the system outside, and that was the plumber's job. Mack (the septic guy) told us that if it were to rain before that line got hooked up then it would be disastrous for the septic system! Well, we were stressed even though there was no rain in the forecast for the next 10 years (!) and tried and tried gettin a hold of our plumber to let him know this news. We also had forgotten to tell him that we wanted a dishwasher. But since we could never catch him at the land or on the phone then we just decided to wait and see what he did. We were going over to the land about 4 or 5 times a day to see the progess. At the beginning our plumber was slow. We came to find out that, evidently, there are two contractors in construction (plumber and roofer) who work by contract. If they have a higher priority contract with another job then they have to go do that job first before yours. He later told us that the week he was supposed to be finishing up our house a $100,000 contract of his called him and had him do his job first. Talk about priorities:) But he got all his rough-in done:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhky72CCBFn1tYeVRLid4PHUXu6bHyoKEM0z8SC4-UHHGwSq83z06k0zLHV_vdC1Qu_ZCM4KdCdvrt4kxBcSgdpcmBRk7Q3iAViCIon0ESZ1_Lp-cNgefQXXp75Fak0W5TpYfEUJ0Ru3uvw/s1600/100_1927.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526883926044447794" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhky72CCBFn1tYeVRLid4PHUXu6bHyoKEM0z8SC4-UHHGwSq83z06k0zLHV_vdC1Qu_ZCM4KdCdvrt4kxBcSgdpcmBRk7Q3iAViCIon0ESZ1_Lp-cNgefQXXp75Fak0W5TpYfEUJ0Ru3uvw/s400/100_1927.JPG" /></a><br /><div><div><div>1. running the line from the main water line to the house.<br />2. putting outside spigots in.</div><div>3. putting all the tub and shower valves in</div><div>4. running all the lines under the house.</div><div>5. putting in the cold and hot water lines in</div><div>6. putting all the hookups for all the sinks in</div><div>7. connecting all the inside house lines to each other</div><div>8. and anything else I may have missed. lol</div><br /><div>All this and we were under his quote by $400!!!! yippee!! We had the option not to have an inspection because we own over 10 acres, but to be safe we did. :)</div><br /><div>During the last few days of the plumber's work, the electricians came in. Now before they did, let me back up and say that we met with the main electrican (Mike Fort) to work out the details of all our placements for light fixtures<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixcz2GnRYvM_cXQ9b8GNYRcOxnGHoKbWdZuQv24jcpejt0jz7s6gpPwxnBeM0ry1jQ62ZzMSfVTE_dEcfg9q53_ha-v4-KxvdCGkMSJCg70H_Sn2OF9WDiOpUHE3awz14_l5tq1gyh00GM/s1600/100_1934.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526883932557792050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixcz2GnRYvM_cXQ9b8GNYRcOxnGHoKbWdZuQv24jcpejt0jz7s6gpPwxnBeM0ry1jQ62ZzMSfVTE_dEcfg9q53_ha-v4-KxvdCGkMSJCg70H_Sn2OF9WDiOpUHE3awz14_l5tq1gyh00GM/s400/100_1934.JPG" /></a>. That was an ordeal! We basically had to know where all our furniture was going to be placed so that we could know where to hang this pendant or that chandelier or those sconces. We had to have our cabinets drawn on the floor and we had to know exactly where all the outlets were to be laid out. Luckily I had though about this a lot so I knew pretty much exactly what kind of fixtures we were putting in each rooms; how much recessed lighting we wanted (we had up to 20 before he started charging us); and how many outlets I wanted (a ton!). I also wanted under cabinet lighting as well as lighting under the stairs for our reading nook. Mike was very helpful with his suggestions. Something that he did though frightenend Paul and me lol! As you can see from this picture he started marking where he was putting the light switches with these dollar sign looking things. We could just imagine all our dollars flying out the window, or rather, through the wiring. Let's just hope this isn't prophetic to how much their final cost is! The electricians have been out twice and will finish up tomorrow where we will pay them. Thankfully we don't have to get anything inspected with them.</div><div></div><div>One last thing, that was a blessing. I just have to tell you! Paul and I had gone back and forth about getting someone to do the roofing. He said that it would take him over a week to lay the shingles, even with Bro. Bob Chambliss helping (a man from our church). We were paying Bro. Bob for being such a blessing, plus Paul had to get all the tools anyways for the job. We figured it would cost about $600 out of our pocket to do our own roof. I told him that we could only budget $800 to hire someone. Paul called several roofers but the cheapest he could find still charged $40 a square (we had 27 squares worth for our roof). Multiply that and you get about $1080. Too much:( Paul was working himself to the bone and after two days had only laid two squares. He fell off the roof ( we won't go there ) <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBpvGoNeeb0bR-eZpWkD0iK9hRQvLeCQzA9DMx05FqXRo3TUoIt-iYf9j_mwFY5JEmoFju6FoSbgBxsb1kqtRJi4Ym-RkEy29qWHB5NS77FGNxVEp6-KNV7grnCJp-cdyA1XXWSXe5AlrU/s1600/100_1920.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526883940568315538" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBpvGoNeeb0bR-eZpWkD0iK9hRQvLeCQzA9DMx05FqXRo3TUoIt-iYf9j_mwFY5JEmoFju6FoSbgBxsb1kqtRJi4Ym-RkEy29qWHB5NS77FGNxVEp6-KNV7grnCJp-cdyA1XXWSXe5AlrU/s400/100_1920.JPG" /></a>and I was very ready for him to just be done! Well, on the second day he went into town to get some lunch and found a guy who did roofing. Paul talked to him and the guy said he would only charge him $23 a square plus $100 to do all the ridgecap. Multiply that by $25 a square and you get only $675!!!!! The Lord very personally answered another prayer!! And the roofer told us later that he only charged us that because he had nothing to do that day! He and his crew finished the whole roof in 7 hours! Praise the Lord!!!!</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>There you have it...the subs are nearly done. Other than the concrete guy coming in to do our outside steps and the fireplace guy doing his deal we are done with subs! Like writing down pretty amazing sayings while I think of them instead of waiting until I write to try to recall them to my sleep deprived brain. Yes, I do think up some pretty amazing things to say! haha. No, really! I'll just let you anticipate them for a later post:)<br /><br /><br />Well, it's now to the slow down stage...haha. Yeah, right. Well, let's see. In terms of appearance wise, then yes, it has slowed down considerably. But in terms of taking a break? Not in the slightest! In all the stages before this I felt kind of like a third wheel. Always going to check on stuff, but never really needed. The builders had a mind to work and get their stuff done and that's exactly what they did. In less than three weeks as a matter of fact. Paul was right: the framing is the quickest, funnest part.<br /><br /><br /><br />Now, it's my turn. It's time to pick out colors and styles. Amounts and places. Stores and online surfing sites. Nights of staying up late to discuss faucet options and budget. Going over a million different ways to hang a light fixture (seriously, who knew?!) Running all over to five different stores only to realize that the first one was the best. Trying to decide if we should have six outdoor electrical outlets as compared to just three and should they be horizontal or vertical? I mean, come on! I wanna have fun and this is NOT my idea of fun! :) But *sigh* it has to be done...<br /><br /><br /><br />Today we are 58 days into the building process. The subs are working and the house is coming together like a beautiful, complicated jigsaw puzzle. The weather is gorgeous! Isn't God good? And we are coming pretty close to budget. I wish I could say we were under, but we aren't. But neither are we over! We are actually budgeting pretty good. There are some things that cost us less (aka windows) than we thought, but there are others that have cost us more (aka fireplace). Sometimes I wish hindsight were a foresight thing. I sure could use a little of it for later. haha<br /><br /><br /><br />Well, for accomplishments. Both our builders are gone. Our deck is completed. Our chimney is done. The septic system is in. The doors are on (exterior, that is). The tubs and showers are ordered and fitted in. The upstairs is framed. The fireplace and windows are on order as well as the shingles. They should all be coming in around the same time next week. The stonework for the fireplace is all lined up as well as a custom made mantel (thanks, Dad Edes!!!!). We are still looking for siding that is just the right color. No copper colored, or orange rust, or nasty apple red! Please, I just want a deep barn red with lots of white trim and pewter gray shingles. I am hoping to find that exact color without breaking the bank:) Oh, and yes. The plumbing is being worked on now. I could say a lot there, but I won't! Did I say earlier that we slowed down??? Okay, maybe we didn't!<br /><br /><br /><br />Let's just say that we, my hubby and I, have made MANY phone calls, trips to stores and decisions. It's funny, the things that make a difference that you don't think about before. For instance, I honestly really didn't think about trim kits for the tubs and shower. The faucets, in English. Yeah, you know. No biggie. Only they were like a $500 biggie. Well.<br /><br /><br /><br />So, are you ready for pictures?? Here are a few, but check out the link below to see the full story:) Enjoy! I wish you could be a real live part of it. It honestly is SOOOO much fun! Paul and I are both in our element:)<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsYcD7rZPg5_q_HYRW1QO2zIuxyXPFjARxrK5y_1x0mOEEr0iQYxmAvkqAHj1QwGzopF1qhv3tqhLEGx_2I48Ii9eavXRTcZ_A575OtOEWYibopNkhk_bE5jTd9fH3QPHXXuFIQ5g8adIS/s1600/100_1838.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522918475991294914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsYcD7rZPg5_q_HYRW1QO2zIuxyXPFjARxrK5y_1x0mOEEr0iQYxmAvkqAHj1QwGzopF1qhv3tqhLEGx_2I48Ii9eavXRTcZ_A575OtOEWYibopNkhk_bE5jTd9fH3QPHXXuFIQ5g8adIS/s400/100_1838.JPG" /></a> The finished stairs. Well, not quite finished, but ya know. Again, we have Advantech on the stairs to prevent that infamous squeaking. Elliot absolutely LOVES going up and down these things. And I must say I like that they are front and center:) I am going to make them beautiful! :)<br /><br /><br /></div><div><br /><br /><br /></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><br /></div><div></div><div><br /></div><div></div><div><br /></div><div></div><div><br /></div><div></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnSzAkl-5pg7Y_dkMmxeAcdPK6gi0KGO9k_dNDNnEL_IzJJS4CmVN0bRKtByydNp2IYu6pfR8M9_2Dl2q5Hhw5_HqUDwMj2DhGqWk11Fd5NIwh-4RvWFJuTvUv1v965u4RLXkbf4sR0-fS/s1600/100_1839.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522918483953004658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnSzAkl-5pg7Y_dkMmxeAcdPK6gi0KGO9k_dNDNnEL_IzJJS4CmVN0bRKtByydNp2IYu6pfR8M9_2Dl2q5Hhw5_HqUDwMj2DhGqWk11Fd5NIwh-4RvWFJuTvUv1v965u4RLXkbf4sR0-fS/s400/100_1839.JPG" /></a></div><div>The finished 12x16 foot deck. </div><div>The second layer will be added later along with stairs.Right now, it will be my babysitter:)</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8lO89PkCMkGlfP3ymT4UN2iiwa6a-yZkmnHhVzYbZelur8iodM5BfhbDAUzGxIW5VjbvRPyX4ddu6JoKvLMjdnfgxNcjzFPidl1J7WmPG_Oc4YfxHdi-rtwstws5cb0znxP4oZ6Jk9RxH/s1600/100_1805.JPG"></a></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Our chimney, on the back of the house. It surely, surely is. So far, it's been (counting from today, September 16th) only 6 weeks since groundbreaking. We have done the foundation, the floor trusses, the flooring, the walls (exterior and interior), the roof trusses, the deck, the bay window, the roof (excluding shingles), the stairs, the upstairs flooring and part framing and the chimney!!! If I could, I'd put about a thousand exclamation points behind that sentence! I'm just so excited!<br /><br />This past week has been extremely busy: we have done the roof trusses, the decking, facia, deck railing, inside stairs, chimney. All that jazz. Bro. Mike stayed until yesterday and Tim is still here working on the days Paul is at his job. He is such a blessing!!<br /><br />Before the roof trusses came we decided do go ahead and do the deck. We hadn't really planned on what we wanted, just what we didn't want. We didn't want it to span the length of the house, though I would've LOVED to have it come all the way to Elliot's back window, in case he fell, you know. But that wasn't to be the case. Paul thought it would be too likely for Elliot to try to climb out when he becomes a teenager. lol. I thought that was hilarious reasoning! :) But I have a good man to think of that! So Tuesday and Wednesday the deck was built. About nine feet off the ground and 12 feet deep by 16 feet wide. Great size! Can't wait to do some barbequeing!<br /><br />Starting with the roof trusses. I just have to say something! I'm sooo glad that we have this opportunity with Elliot. He has been LOVING our home being built! We go out there every day and he sees all the progress and the machines and he just has the time of his life:) Praise the Lord! I hope he always remembers this! So, we order the trusses last Monday and they arrive on Wednesday. During that time, Bro. Mike was finishing up the interior walls. Thursday, the crane came and in about three hours they had the trusses put up and nailed in place. Bro. Mike was so awesome just climbing and not even wobbling so high up! I tried walking across a two by four laying on the ground and fell off like three times! So I would die walking up there!!! My heart about dies inside me thinking about it. *deep breath* lol Dad was there helping, guiding with a rope to where the trusses needed to be set. Bro. Mike, Tim and Paul were up nailing them into place and bracing them with 2x4s. Elliot and I stayed for most and then left. The rest of the day they spent putting the decking on the roof. That was only sheets of plywood laid across. They got half done along with the facia, which is 2x4s that cap the bottom end of the trusses.<br /><br /><br />Friday the rain came! And the inside of our home got all wet! But that's why we used Advantech so we wouldn't have to worry about warping. But they were still able to work and they got the rest of the decking and felting down. (The felt is roofing paper that acts as a water barrier).<br /><br />The rest of the weekend and this week was spent on "piddly" things as I mentioned in an earlier paragraph. It was really busy, but now that that's all done we are going to start s l o w i n g d o w n.........<br /><br /><br />I did mention something on Facebook about going to the salvage yard with hubby. I can't stand when I have high hopes! Mine got sorely dashed last Wednesday. I had heard so many good things about a certain salvage yard. We went and got disappointed. Now, mind you, their selection was pretty amazing! They had great rugs and sinks and flooring and even exterior doors. But we went to look for windows and fireplaces and other such stuff. I felt like such a loser asking the lady, "well, do you have windows?" "well, do you have fireplaces?" "well, do you have tubs?" AHHHHH!! They didn't have what we were looking for at that particular time, but we will be going there later for some other stuff. I had promised Paul that I knew what I was doing so that I could get him to go with me. It about killed him to not work on the house on his day off. So I was pretty upset when all three of our stores were a bust! Only after six hours of getting lost and frustrated with our finds did we stop to realize that we were spending time together! Something we hadn't hardly done since we had started our house! When we both thought about this we started having a great time just enjoying each other's company. We may not have found what we wanted, but we had a good time looking:)<br /><br />So, this week we are supposed to get our windows and doors. We have to go pick out our tubs and showers. We have to prepare everything for the subs to start their work in the next week. That is going to be interesting. The subs. Their work is sooo important! I hope they go fast and efficiently! :) And then we begin work on the vinyl siding and shingling. We are seriously considering hiring out our shingling work, but I would love to save money here, so prayerfully we will do the right thing. We are getting ready to get our bill for all our lumber. I'm praying it's less than $10,000! We can only pray, right??:) We shall see!<br /><br />Well, folks, go check out my link for all the pictures. I've got to take some more of the deck and stairs but it already looks soooo different! Hope you enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!<br /><br /><a href="http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/It%20is%20starting%20to%20look%20like%20one/?albumview=slideshow">http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/It%20is%20starting%20to%20look%20like%20one/?albumview=slideshow</a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />On to build,<br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-47494736982308276302010-09-07T19:39:00.001-07:002010-09-07T21:28:30.791-07:00The Best Part!disclaimer: long post:)<br /><br />First of all, about the pictures. I have created a link so you can see ALL of them instead of 5 at a time...here it is: <a href="http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/The%20Best%20Part/">http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/The%20Best%20Part/</a><br /><br />God is so good! I have to start this way, because, well, He is! There have been many ways this past week that He has helped us. I don't have the room to explain them all, but I will intersperse a few things in this post. As my title says, this part of home building is one of my favorite parts! I know the inside stuff, like the painting and flooring will be pretty neat, but the best part to me is seeing our house come together. My husband's and my dream becoming reality...what was on paper is now in wood. In real life size, not miniature. Tangible not imagined. I LOVE this part! I love, love, love it! :)<br /><br />As you know, we left off with the trusses. Paul was able to do that with just the church men's help. But the closer we got to the framing the more we began to contemplate having somebody come in to help. We discussed having a local, but Paul was quite adament about having his old boss, Bro. Mike Mueller, come in for the framing section. Now that we are almost done with the framing I can see how wise of a choice this was. Sure, we wanted to save money, but we also had a time constraint and with us being able to save money in other areas we were able to have Bro. Mike come up. Bro. Mike is a fast worker, very efficient and Paul knows his style of framing so he could help after work, whereas he would have to learn the ins and outs of other framers if we had them instead. And Bro. Mike gave us the best price around:) Thank you, Lord!<br /><br /><br />Bro. Mike (who is Bro. Rob Mueller's brother) came in Monday, August 30th. Paul and him went out to the land and surveyed the job site and ran a couple errands.We went over our plans multiple, multiple times and made a few minor changes. He had great ideas and comments, so I was eager to listen and learn! For example, do you know that you can change layouts even in the framing portion of building? I did not know this. When I heard this I was like, I am NOT going to be that mean person to do that to my framer, but alas, I did not keep that promise! At least I didn't have him tear down a whole wall or something:) lol! So, Monday was errand day; Tuesday was finish up the Advantech and chalk the lines for the walls day. That was fun because I could finally tell exactly how big each room would be. It was still a little hard to imagine because it wasn't in 3D form yet, but it helped a great deal! We decided to make the hallway 6 inches smaller so that the boy's rooms would be bigger; we made a soft angle into one of their doorways instead of straight corners. I'm glad someone came up with that idea of chalking floors:) Vewy, vewy smawt!!<br /><br /><br />Man, there is soooo much I'm not telling you for lack of room. So many things that I have learned in this process! Oh well, be content!! :)<br /><br /><br />So, all this time, nobody was there to really help Mike. Joel helped on Tuesday with the laying of the Advantech (which was a HUGE blessing), but Wednesday when the lumber came Bro. Mike was the only one at the job site. It about killed my husband to not be there. It didn't really matter though because Bro. Mike was able to get the whole back walls built and put up with the windows and doors formed and everything (just not the headers put in, which is the top of the windows and doors).<br /><br /><br />Thursday, several men were able to come and help put up the rest of the exterior walls and a few interior walls. (Thank you, men, though you probably won't read this lol) Friday and Saturday, Paul was off work and helped put up the rest of the interior walls. Now, there was a slight problem Friday. That day was a church field trip that I went on and would not be at the job site for most of the day. Before this I had been at least twice or three times a day. I didn't want something happening that I didn't know about. Nothing happened on those days, but on the day I was gone, they ran into a problem. Where I had the stairs was not going to work...at. all. Coming up the stairs our heads would be sticking into the rafter part of the trusses. I didn't even think about that! Man! So, my husband made an executive decision in my absence to move the stairs from the front part of the house to the middle part of the house in front of our bedroom. It's hard to explain exactly where. It made our bedroom two feet shorter, though it was able to make it two feet wider. So, I guess there were no problems there:) haha. But it still got my heart racing when I heard my hubby's voice, "Honey, we have a problem"! But the Lord worked it out.<br /><br />Well, today is Tuesday, September 7th. As of today, all the exterior and interior walls are put up. The house wrap is on(to shield the wood from bad weather). The deck posts are put in and we are now waiting on the trusses. Tomorrow they will finish the 12 x 24 foot deck in the back. It's about ten feet off the ground! What a view:) Thursday they will put the roof trusses on and during the weekend they will do the stairs, plywood and felt the roof, put in windows and doors and we will officially be "dried in". Safe from the elements!! Yippee!!!!!<br /><br /><br />On to build,<br /><br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-20768779207256926362010-09-02T09:48:00.000-07:002010-09-02T10:43:19.813-07:00TRUSSES! Is that exciting sounding or what? :)Praise the Lord, we are ahead of schedule!! We should just be finishing up putting the flooring down, but instead the exterior walls are nearly finished!! God is good! We have had some excellent help with the trusses and now with the walls...several men came from the church a week and a half ago to help lay the floor trusses! Those things are monster big! My brother, Nate, has already been out several times. Brothers do come in handy sometimes:) Joel, my brother in law, has been out twice and my awesome dad has been out several times also. They have helped with the cutting, measuring, hauling, placing, marking and just plain moral support! What a blessing! Thank you everyone, thank you!! We would be FAR behind schedule without you and I would have a pretty stressed out husband:) But instead he is very pleased with the progess! As am I:)<br /><br />As much has happened it has been a pretty uneventful week. I know that may sound oxymoronic, but it's true. Nothing has not gone well, our materials have not been stolen, the weather has been great, and we have not made any major mistakes on the house. My husband did the floor trusses himself (as far as the layout and measuring; we had great help from the church men) and everything measured up perfectly. He had to do some manuvering with the bay window to try to get it in a 45 degree angle. It ended up in a 40 degree angle, but both sides match, so that's what counts! He moved slower with the Advantech than was planned. But it really didn't mess him up as far as the schedule. We did have some figuring to do this past week as far as the window placement, sizes, door sizes, and overhang size (the overhang is technically called the "eaves" of the house, really how far out the side of the house the roof goes). We decided on 20 inches. We contemplated going farther out in the back so the deck would have some covering, but that would be a huge jump in cost for the extra truss work. We decided to just build a covering for the portion of the deck that we want covered, instead. After we decided the window sizes we took them up to Lewis Hills (this was Monday) and he ordered the lumber to come on Wednesday. He had to know the window sizes to know exactly how much lumber we would need. For you future house builders out there, I learned something about windows:) When I recorded all the windows that I needed I put the height of the window first and then the width. It was nicely suggested to me (so as not to confuse the framer) that the WIDTH should go first and then the HEIGHT. I didn't realize little things make a big difference, but many a times has there been a window where the measurements were wrong because of this particular reason! I did NOT want that to happen to me! Well, as I said earlier it was a pretty uneventful week, but one filled with much excitement!!! Our flooring is now done!! Here are the pictures...<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAtoLveWwKDIsESdaygsOuN3qCl8jBJMfC2_cxLZxdSp8JqX9WULikgqi8au6eScP8BJL1rJ2jVT7qxbaS6Hc-jDyCTsqSYRFitJcFNIREM7b8J3pe1ebwygkyQe3vmfNx3CCDZU3GDyG/s1600/100_1600.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512360243746981378" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAtoLveWwKDIsESdaygsOuN3qCl8jBJMfC2_cxLZxdSp8JqX9WULikgqi8au6eScP8BJL1rJ2jVT7qxbaS6Hc-jDyCTsqSYRFitJcFNIREM7b8J3pe1ebwygkyQe3vmfNx3CCDZU3GDyG/s400/100_1600.JPG" /></a> The pile of Advantech and rim board. Now you can see why we got builder's risk insurance...this stuff would be so easy to steal just lying there! Advantech is an extremely durable material that is used for the flooring. It comes with a 50 year warranty against squeaks and does not warp when it gets wet. It cost a little bit extra than regular plywood, but in the long run (and probably in the short run, too) it is worth it. The rim board is just sheets of OSB that goes up against the truss ends. It's so the siding has something to hold onto.<br /><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuM3TyvVr5rzfPJ6ikxn6Hl-HH29tF-EoUTnAfcMlwtI0RnmbxLmWWNPrnsTuq8YXwIPXklvjny4xGUub8x_vYcBgCIJC0iUYm33A9kAV7vkTD4PYEsu7-xqg9Er3fP-PClFmI0orNo2h6/s1600/100_1611.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512360234688962418" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuM3TyvVr5rzfPJ6ikxn6Hl-HH29tF-EoUTnAfcMlwtI0RnmbxLmWWNPrnsTuq8YXwIPXklvjny4xGUub8x_vYcBgCIJC0iUYm33A9kAV7vkTD4PYEsu7-xqg9Er3fP-PClFmI0orNo2h6/s400/100_1611.JPG" /></a><br />Paul's new nail gun and the cantilever floor trusses. This was pretty interesting because at first we were just going to buy a regular bay window (talked about in earlier post), but decided instead to build the window into the floor trusses. A little more work, but less expensive and sturdier. Paul had to figure out the angle and placement with the level and tape measure. He was off a few degrees, but nothing detrimental. He worked about 6-8 hours just on this portion.<br /><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuvW4ZpIsGd-nsTKFNenTXTa7uyTQAwCSvtmLAWEsBjGJAbzkgqCzrwLrgQ4for01y2id9da1qthWdX0bAXb4se5Qr65zVwJIkucU9CB7hHqlbPFYAWHw5nm1rWjLfbv7_Zmku22LWvVGp/s1600/100_1597.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512360223438112258" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuvW4ZpIsGd-nsTKFNenTXTa7uyTQAwCSvtmLAWEsBjGJAbzkgqCzrwLrgQ4for01y2id9da1qthWdX0bAXb4se5Qr65zVwJIkucU9CB7hHqlbPFYAWHw5nm1rWjLfbv7_Zmku22LWvVGp/s400/100_1597.JPG" /></a><br />Elliot's church he built out of the floor truss ends. :) He had a steeple put up earlier made out of a post or something, but decided it would be better used as a gun to kill the butterflies. lol<br /><br /><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7FANFsFLbCeYWkCsEj5-U-Jo43Uw77h7jDND3DdrKKRTAO__a-l2FbmBCPqBdp1XaPS4Zf1U2YHyKq0O_LR9-aLFEpGa0MbSZp8W0xCCdArUGDYWpx5UlqI4aRcdKoA0keENi08fy5yzr/s1600/100_1601.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512360204752584994" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7FANFsFLbCeYWkCsEj5-U-Jo43Uw77h7jDND3DdrKKRTAO__a-l2FbmBCPqBdp1XaPS4Zf1U2YHyKq0O_LR9-aLFEpGa0MbSZp8W0xCCdArUGDYWpx5UlqI4aRcdKoA0keENi08fy5yzr/s400/100_1601.JPG" /></a><br />My hardworking hubby. I feel sooo bad about not getting the pics of the men who did all the hard work; Bro. Stamp and his son Dalton, Bro. Reynolds, Bro. Higgins. When I came up that day to take the pictures I realized that I had left my SD card in my computer! I am a loser!! But they did all the laying of this side. They spent most of their Saturday being a blessing to us:)<br /><br /><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB2Yvm3FcdojoMJjgqVSFTwolFamgAmkwt-E5k6f9hsgAoLPRzUl7Mu7kuNrLHssrtvGUx5YySsZfvawXYIa_mr5P9ZOPxaOrOU-JTDqEbUyTpRizNndJqO39WquP66xXshq6s0XYmqNn-/s1600/100_1593.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512360188235151682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB2Yvm3FcdojoMJjgqVSFTwolFamgAmkwt-E5k6f9hsgAoLPRzUl7Mu7kuNrLHssrtvGUx5YySsZfvawXYIa_mr5P9ZOPxaOrOU-JTDqEbUyTpRizNndJqO39WquP66xXshq6s0XYmqNn-/s400/100_1593.JPG" /></a><br />The level comes in really handy! It tells us if we have a truss that is higher than the others. The outer edges of the foundation were first marked and then the trusses were placed in position and banged with a hammer until perfectly lined up. If you looked down the side of the trusses they would all be straight as an arrow. That takes a lot of work and precise measuring. A pretty tedious job, but necessary.<br /><br /><br /><div> </div><div> </div><div>I'll be posting tonight or tomorrow to catch us up with the flooring and walls!! This is pretty exciting stuff guys. I can't wait until it's done and I can have you all over for a visit:) You are welcome anytime. YAY, YAY and more YAY!! When the block was being laid all I could think about was "I hope this house will be big enough!" I don't mean to sound carnal, but it sure didn't look big enough for my house plan's drawings. But once we got the trusses down ( or up...I'm not quite sure which one it is) it seems bigger! And Paul says that once the walls go up it will seem ever larger! If only it could just keep growing and growing...welllll, maybe not. More to clean, so no thanks! I purposely picked an 1800 square foot house so that it would fit a growing family, but also keep us together (thanks to an open floor plan) and be easier to clean. I don't think I could live very happily in a 4000 square foot home. I wouldn't feel connected to my chillins. I'm pretty sure I would need a map just to find the laundry room and such. And all the furniture to dust and floors to mop?? Once again, no thank you! An 1800 s.f. house will suit just fine:) Now a few years down the road when we have about 6 more children (HAHAHAHA) we will finish the upstairs 800 s.f.<br /><br />I won't go into detail about the floor trusses just yet...I want to wait until I have all the pictures and everything is finished. Though I will tell you that it keeps looking more and more like a house!! Obviously:) But really, I am SOOO bad at imagining what things look like. I can't come up with an original idea to save my life! That's why I love houzz.com! I don't have to blow my mind coming up with some pretty creative things...that's what that site is for:) All I need to do is incorporate it into my lifestye and tastes.<br /><br /><br />Anyways, I'm rambling. Let's get to where I want to go with this entry! Self-sufficiency! Wow, weird, I know:) But hang on...I am not going off the deep end here. I just want to mention a few things that I have waited 5 years to do in our own home...things that will probably save us mo<a href="http://knol.google.com/k/-/-/3a9e8hggiw4cz/vwgbbj/vegetable-garden.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 228px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://knol.google.com/k/-/-/3a9e8hggiw4cz/vwgbbj/vegetable-garden.jpg" /></a>ney; very likely be hard work; but (most importantly) definitely bring our family together in ways that won't happen if we rely on everybody and every place else for our needs. Now, I have never done any of these things that I will be mentioning...it will take years to perfect and I may even become weary and fail sometimes, but my dream has been to supply my family with a healthy, affordable and fun way of eating, playing and living!<br /><br /><br />First of all: a garden:) Not just a flower garden, and not even just a vegetable garden; but a garden of fruits, vegetables, herbs and grains where we can last a whole year off it's produce. What a wonderful way to start becoming more self sufficient. Even just the first step of planting a few veggies or starting a mini herb garden will improve your health and give you and your kiddos something fun to do! I can't wait!<br /><br /><a href="http://singlemindedwomen.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Tomatoes-on-vine2.PNG.png"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 272px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 270px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://singlemindedwomen.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Tomatoes-on-vine2.PNG.png" /></a><br />A great book that I have read over and over is called The Backyard Homesteader. It has soooo many ideas and ways to start your own garden even though you might only live on 1/4 acre! Don't be afraid of new things...try them!<br /><br />Secondly (and this kind of correlates to number one), making myown bread/pasta/cereals, etc. I won't begin to tell you how much healthier this is for you and your family. Knowing exactly what is in your food and where it came from, to me anyways, is a huge relief!! Can you imagine whipping up a batch of spaghetti, knowing where every single igredient, from the pasta to the herbs, came from? See? I have already begun to tell you:) I'll stop! *smile* Can you see the money you'll be saving by not going to the grocery store for just these foods! I know with my addiction to cereal, that I'd be saving a couple hundred a month! Not really, but (yikes!) it's probably pretty close! So even for this reason only, what a great thing to do!:)<br /><br />Thirdly, chickens!!! Other than the fact that I absolutely love these little creatures<a href="http://tinyfarmblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/spr08_chickens_separated.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 355px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 280px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://tinyfarmblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/spr08_chickens_separated.jpg" /></a>, what better way to save money (and be 10,000 times healthier) than to grow your own meat and eggs! This may end up being one of my most favorite things to do! Several of my friends have chickens and none of them regret it. They have fresh eggs every day, great meats and less bugs around their house. Plus those things are so stinking cute! There is really no downside to this idea at all!! Now, the only thing I am worried about is the bobcat that my hubby says lives in our woods! I would be soooo mad if it killed all our little chicks. I would prefer my man to kill the bobcat before we move in! But if he doesn't then I may have to wait on our precious chickens :( boohoo!! But this is definitely a "yes" for the future! :)<br /><br />So, there are some of my ideas on becoming self sufficient:) I have more, but don't want to scare you off:) hehe. It wasn't too bad, was it? I told you! I am by NO MEANS the expert on this...I have only been researching stuff for 5 years or so...and I have TONS to learn! In fact, if you have any comments on ANY kind of self sufficient ideas, I would love to hear them! Please!! I could have gone on about getting your own milk cow (which I would LOVE to do) or even a few milk goats, but if you're interested here is a great link that was a blessing to me:<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.nogreaterjoy.org/articles/general-view/archive/2010/june/08/from-city-slickers-to-happy-homesteaders/">http://www.nogreaterjoy.org/articles/general-view/archive/2010/june/08/from-city-slickers-to-happy-homesteaders/</a> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div>Well, have a great middle of the week everyone:) I will have more to post the end of the week. Thank you SOOOO much for reading! You make my day:)</div><div> </div><div>On to build,</div><div><br />Rachael</div><div> </div><div> </div></div></div>A Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-46369640297578901652010-08-11T09:17:00.000-07:002010-08-19T21:32:31.316-07:00A Mind to WorkI feel like one of those gossipy little ladies..."I have SOOO much to tell you!"But it's true!! Now that my computer is working again I have so much to do:) These past two weeks I have been so seriously busy. We have been moving into a house that we are housesitting for a friend for the next seven months. Church has been uber busy and my 12 piano students are finally back into full swing for lessons! Between all that and building, my life has felt like one of those teacup rides at fairs...tons of turns and spins until you don't know which way you're facing. But when life gets back to "normal", it may feel kinda boring:) haha!<br /><br />Okay, so we are done. Completed. Finished. The foundation anyways:) And it looks fantabulous!!! (yes, that is a "fantastic" and "fabulous" smooshed together...them by themselves just didn't do justice!) We had the best block layers in all of America come in and help us. Thank God for the Mueller Men. After they got the block brought to the land it only took them 2 1/2 days to do our foundation! And after you look at our pics you will see that that is no small feat! They used 1050 blocks with the back wall going 10 courses high! Seriously, if you fell off the back wall you could hurt yourself! Ahhhh! But I gotta say, that our view off of our back porch is gonna rock!!! It will be gorge:)!<br /><br />Wednesday, August 4th our footers were dug and the concrete was poured. You have seen those pictures. Actually, here's one of the concrete and step downs ( a gradual move down the slope so they didn't have to handcut blocks to the exact size.)<br /><a href="http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/?action=view&current=100_1555-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="Photobucket" src="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/th_100_1555-1.jpg" /></a><br /><br />We were supposed to get the blocks Friday. But Thursday, Paul got a phone call at 7:30 a.m. saying that the blocks were on the way to the land and they needed someone out there to meet them with the moolah. This may sound fantastic but in reality my poor hubby had just gotten off a twelve hour night shift and had only been sleeping for 45 minutes! But him being most amazing, he dragged himself out of bed and called the Mueller Men. They said they would meet Paul at the land and Paul and I headed out the door ( I wasn't gonna let my man drive himself on no sleep...no way!) On the way, the Mueller Men called Paul and told him that they were going to need a concrete mixer if they were going to be able to start on the foundation right away, so we went to rent one. There we go...<br /><br />When we got to the land, the truck was there waiting on us. A HUGE semi truck loaded down with a trillion blocks! Actually it is 1150 blocks. And at $1.04 a block we kept a close eye on it!! Here's the picture.<br /><a href="http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/?action=view&current=100_1554-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="WIDTH: 203px; HEIGHT: 136px" border="0" alt="Photobucket" src="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/th_100_1554-1.jpg" width="266" height="120" /></a><br /><br /><br />So, the driver takes down this pretty amazing looking machine that evidently he was going to use to move all the block off the truck down to our lot. That thing was awesome! I did not get a picture though :(<br /><br />It took about 30 minutes to unload all the block and to drop off the ladders and plates and materials we would need. We paid him and he was off. I left as soon as the block guy left and on my way back to the house it started pouring down rain! Buckets and buckets...yes, it decided to rain after two weeks of no rain on the day we start our block work! But no worries! It gave the Men a much needed break and it ended up only raining for an hour or so. They got to work as soon as it got done. And in case you were wondering, rain is okay for cement. I was kind of stressed that it would ruin the concrete work, but evidently it's good for it! Yay!<br /><br />Anyhoo, the block work was started. Here are a few random pictures with explanations of the materials and such. This is pretty self explanatory.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://s793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/?action=view&current=100_1559-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="WIDTH: 184px; HEIGHT: 144px" border="0" alt="Photobucket" src="http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/edeshappyfam/blog%20pictures/th_100_1559-1.jpg" width="186" height="119" /></a><br />The block was piled up where it was needed. We were able to get almost $200 back for it! Yay!<br /><br />As you can see, those pictures were pretty self explanatory:) I like when that happens. The block has been done for a little over a week now. Today we got our flooring truss system. I am going to get pictures of the papers and the whole process. Paul is starting tomorrow with my brother, Nate, to put the floors on. Saturday, men from the church are coming to our land to put the main beam on and to help with the rest of the floor! Such a blessing.<br /><br />A good thing that we got this week was builder's risk insurance. This will cover all of our uninstalled items (in case people steal or whatnot) and it will be insurance for all those who decide to work with us. I hope we never have to use it, but as insurance goes, if you don't have it then that's when you need it! We'd rather just go ahead and buy it:)<br /><br />This week, my job will be to figure out our window measurements...and that brings me to a pretty neat thing real quick. In our Master Bedroom I am having a ten foot wide "bay" window. I am putting "bay" like that because it's not technically called bay. The window that we wanted would have cost us $1700!! Outrageous!!! And that's just the window unit, not the lumber and extras that would be needed to put it up!! I almost choked when we found that out. So our lumber guy did some figuring and helped us come up with an alternative that I actually think is better...we will put up three windows in the shape of a bay. The exact same size windows and everything! And it only cost (with the extra truss flooring) $800!! Talk about a deal! Yes! God is good:) But, onto my job. I have to figure out what all our window sizes will be. We are having 16 windows in our house. The larger the better for me, but I may have to tone down for Paul's sake:) He's a little concerned about money, of course! I will be thrifty, dear, don't worry!! We are planning a trip to a home salvage yard in Nashville to see if they have any windows in their warehouse and we will also be looking at other house materials. I'm excited to go! Hopefully we can get some great deals!<br /><br />So,<br /><br />On to build,<br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-31988934700037136492010-08-04T20:44:00.001-07:002010-08-04T22:04:48.743-07:00A Strong Foundation<span style="font-size:+0;"></span><span></span><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF19MisFTCmFcDpzPqlFPq4p6qusHaZ8hIWVDY7mt8DJJj_63GFtj9LQfmTaX7xAS0GEPAmW65Zw_phk-BP0U8AH3KTd6M1_gr80eZbNcWne9jBKgOzeccLN1O_BhZDOtdmdN2da8ZSem8/s1600/100_1540.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501775365474758754" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF19MisFTCmFcDpzPqlFPq4p6qusHaZ8hIWVDY7mt8DJJj_63GFtj9LQfmTaX7xAS0GEPAmW65Zw_phk-BP0U8AH3KTd6M1_gr80eZbNcWne9jBKgOzeccLN1O_BhZDOtdmdN2da8ZSem8/s320/100_1540.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><div><div>It's amazing to me all the work that goes into making sure that a house's foundation is secure, settled, deep, strong. The time and strength necessary. The equipment, tools, materials. And yet, it makes sense. What's the point in building a beautiful home? buying gorgeous fixtures? choosing quality furnishings? What's the point if you don't take the time and work needed to make sure the foundation is right. It's worth nothing. (great spiritual analogy!)<br /><br />Today, August 4th, I saw the first (or actually like the fifth) load of dirt being dug from our land. It was quite an experience and I'll be the first to admit that I got just a tad emotional:) Oh, come on:) I just couldn't help it! The Lord has blessed me with a fantastic husband, two beautiful kids, and now, soon, a house of our very own. A place where we can raise our family! Somewhere we will make memories and our children will grow up and talk about where they caught the minnows in the creek; or killed their first turkey; or grew their own little garden; rode bikes through wooded trails; raised a puppy; had a tree fort; a place where, Lord willing, they will always want to come back to. I have always dreamed of living in one place my whole life. To gradually make it the perfect place for us. Where I can strive to be the "virtuous woman". And my man can hunt and build and wrestle with his buddies to his heart's content:) I can't wait.<br /></div><div>But before all that can happen, we must have a foundation. Built by the best. The stronger the foundation, the more secure our home.</div><div><br /><br />Well, here's what happened today (and some things yesterday that led up to today). Some pretty amazing things and some funny things:)</div><div><br />As I said earlier our foundation man is a man named Rob Mueller. He brought his family down (16 kids!!) and he and five of his boys went to the land yesterday to square off exactly where our house will be. We had to situate it a little because our house is being built on a slope (we're kind of on a hill). We situated it so we wouldn't have a ten foot wall of block in the back! Anyways, they marked it off with a spray can of paint, showing where the footers will be and stuff. The boys dug, using only a pick axe and shovel, a huge rock out of our lot. (thankfully it was only one of two rocks on our land that needed to be taken out...we were kind of worried about that) Paul was quite impressed. They are the hardest working people I have ever met in my entire life. They don't complain although it got over 105 degrees today (not the heat index!) and they are just grateful to work. After they got the lot marked, Paul and Rob went errand running. They got:</div><div><br />Foundation chairs from Lowe's...I don't really know what they do. Maybe I'll post later what they do.</div><div><br />They called several concrete places and picked the best price of the three. You measure concrete for projects like this in yards. We needed 15 yards of concrete for the footer work. We got a pretty good deal. At least it was under budget:) The concrete was to be delivered today.</div><div> </div><div>They stopped by Lewis Hill Sales (our Amish Lumber Supply Yard) and made a few orders that we would need for today.</div><div><br />That all happened yesterday. Pretty busy. But nothing compared to today!</div><div><br />Our footer digger (!), Mr. James Brown, came out this morning with his mini excavator and started digging our footers at 8:00 a.m. I got to our land about 8:06 with the boys. Elliot got out and immediately started digging holes with his own mini excavator (a spoon). While the footers were being dug, the Mueller men were digging out the piers for where the pillars will be going. The pillars are this:<br /></div><div>They span the width of the house (50 feet). There are six of them that are made up of concrete blocks and on top of them lies the beam that is the main weight holder of the house. The footer blocks go along the perimeter of the house and the middle beam goes across the middle of the house. Underneath of course:). So, there's the Mueller men digging, again by hand, the six piers where the block pillars will go, where the beam will lay across! Good luck figuring that out:) If I didn't watch it happen, I would be clueless too:) Maybe I'll copy and paste a Wikepedia thing about it. They'd probably do a better job explaining that than me!<br /></div><div>Anyways, that took from about 8 this morning to 3:30 this afternoon. They broke for lunch, which I brought for them.<br /></div><div>Here's a couple pics!</div><div> </div><div> </div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501775370020394482" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOuG9UTOU4b8jkEGXuFsIVawdRGly3FZnvQFxOR4n2E3VPJoFxuypsWq-9mlZXfE6UYpknj_k5U4MDKLuXHLpO3ubKDrCRVI3AM8VOCKnX2h03VyAKFQgWTTSUb12EAiAAKSe4s7k1AOqe/s320/100_1541.JPG" /></div><div> Some of the paint line where the footers will be dug.<br /><br /><br /></div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501775346954969538" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXn4Qu-bldvC_PYAg6we0kKoq_lvPqL2An2dkJY1RxSkQ9JbTRidYImkm8wFnVB8B8XhxVFvVHhoi5U09x1owiuVHu63Eum7nCZnw0JNt5kpfFbOK7p6r1TxkxymRvpjlOa50eKJb-lFdC/s320/100_1538.JPG" /> The mini excavator is doing its job!! This was at the beginning of the day. We heard about this man from a guy at our church. He had great prices and didn't dawdle. He got the job done. We also came way under budget with him! Yay!</p><p>So after the footers were dug, the concrete truck came and Rob and his boys formed up the footers with lumber (just a temporary measure until the conrete dries, or something:) and poured the concrete and laid the rebar. Rebar is long metal strands that secure the concrete better (I think). Boy, am I a wealth of information. I tried to understand all of what Paul was saying when I asked him what all this was for, but I'm gonna have to write it down because I'm sure he thought I was a dummy when I asked him like twelve times what rebar does. But, anyways, I'll be going over there tomorrow and taking a bunch of pictures of the finished footer work. Friday the blocks come in and the work of laying them will start. </p><p>I did tell you that something funny happened today. Paul and I made a quick trip with the boys over to Lewis Hill Sales. It was humorous because the Amish had met Rob yesterday and were quite flabbergasted ( I guess shocked would be a better word) when they found out he had 16 children!! Today they couldn't stop asking us questions about him!! Maybe he is their hero. One Amish man said, "I only have 9!" Like that was a small number or something! But I do have to say that the Mueller family have the best behaved kids I have EVER seen!!! I need to ask that Mom what she does:) But, there was something else that was pretty funny. Our first construction loan check we made out was to Lewis Hill Sales...and it was for the wrong amount! So we had to void it:) hehe. Then after I wrote the second check I saw that instead of it saying "Paul" at the top it said "Raul". Yeah, they messed up our first construction loan checks! How dare!!! Just kidding:) It was pretty funny. I laughed and laughed...Paul didn't so much:) He just got worried that they wouldn't take the check, which they did! So, no worries, hon...it all worked out! He did call the bank though and let them know the horrific mistake they made:) haha </p><p>Well, that was the day today...busy and extremely productive! Praise the Lord.</p><p>With it being so hot, It would be awesome if you said a quick prayer for the men working out there in it...there are probably men all over this country and world doing the same thing. For you soldier wives, I pray hard for your men over in the Middle East being in this heat all the time. God bless them.</p><p>Well, there's the beginning of the foundation work! It should all be done within two weeks. The Lord is good and we've come under budget in 5 out of 6 things!!! Thank God!!</p><p> </p><p>On to build,</p><p>Rachael</p>A Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-40573092474453895802010-08-02T11:37:00.001-07:002010-08-02T21:41:48.455-07:00My Brain is Fried!Oh my goodness, I have done enough thinking this last week to last me a lifetime:) I am so not used to it. *smile*<br /><br />With us starting the foundation there has been SOOOO much stuff to do. It's hitting home, realizing that our dream is becoming reality! The prelim stuff was fun, so I can't even begin to imagine how awesome actually building the house will be!! But before it's awesome, it's not so awesome. We've been budgeting and figuring out what we can afford to spend and how to spend what we do have. The Lord has been good and we have been able to pay for everything so far with cash. We are still going to be able to pay for digging the footers and some miscellaneous things with cash, which is a huge blessing and will be so great for when we switch from the construction loan to an actual mortgage. I finally broke down and bought Quicken to help us become more streamlined in our actual spending/saving. I am SOOO glad I did that. Before, most of our budgeting was done on paper and that was SUCH a headache!! But now, all I have to do is input our debits and deposits and it automatically budgets what we spend in what category...pretty amazing:)<br /><br />Wow, looking at that last paragraph, that was sooo boring! I know you ain't reading this blog for financial advice. I mean, come on. We just took out a huge loan, why would you want advice from us? HAHA! :) Well, back to the non awesome stuff:<br /><br />Back to the budget. Paul and I have been wrestling back and forth about if he needs help with the framing and if it's money worth. To be honest, with one man doing the framing (which is totally possible), it would take 2 to 3 months to roof in. Paul has this awesome friend in Florida who has promised before we even got the loan to come and help him in the framing. (Tim, you're amazing!) But literally, we don't have the tools or the manpower to finish it in less than 6 weeks. I know, you're probably thinking, "Well, that's not too long". But here's the deal:<br /><br />The block will be done in the third week of this month. We are going to be letting the foundation settle for three weeks. That brings us to the middle of September before we begin the framing. And here's the kicker. Mack Brame, our Septic guy, needs to put the septic system in before the middle of October (or the ground will be too hard and he won't be able to dig). So, there. Gotta have the framing done by the beginning of Oct.<br /><br />If it wasn't for that, I would have won the argument and just have Paul and Tim doing the framing. But Paul made that very good point and I lost! :) hehe. Oh well. I am kinda happy that it's gonna be done sooner (if not cheaper). But, we believe that the Lord has already supplied the money for the extra framer!<br /><br />So, Paul called Tim in FL. Tim gave us the brilliant idea to ask Paul's fomer boss in FL to see if he might be able to come up for two weeks and help him frame. Besides the expertise he would bring, he would also bring all his tools (hence saving thousands of dollars of tool buying). So...Paul called Bro. Mike Mueller. You want to know what's so cool. Mike Mueller's brother, Rob, is the one doing our foundation work! Small world:) Anyways, Mike was very open to the idea and gave us a really great bid for the job. And of course, I wasn't happy enough with the one bid, so I begged Paul to call some local framers to see what their quotes were. That was pointless...they were all much higher. But one good thing came of it.<br /><br />When Paul explained to one of the framers that he would be using 2x12s to frame up the floor trusses, the guy opened up the option of using TJI's instead. Now TJI stands for "Tru Joist something". I don't know what the "I" stands for. oh well. But it's basically an engineered floor truss system. It's straighter than 2x12s; it needs less concrete, block, nails and labor to install; and it has a 30 year warranty against squeaking! This was a no brainer for us. And the cost will even out considering what we don't have to use to install it. Does that make sense? Hope so. :)<br /><br />"Thank you, Mr. Framer, for the excellent piece of advice." This, people, always goes to show you that it's never too late to ask for advice. Or to take advice even when it's not been asked for. There is always somebody smarter than you! lol<br /><br />So, where was I? Oh, yes. getting framer quotes. My dear mother told us of an Amish lumber company in Crofton, KY (where our house is being built). So, today my hubby, kids and I decided to check it out. There was an Amish framer involved so, what the hey! We drove out into beautiful country and there against gorgeous field and woods backdrop is the company. It definitely looked out of place. :) We drove back there and there were all our soon to be Amish neighbors working so hard to make lumber. It smelled amazing!! Love the smell of newly made wood. May be my new favorite scent. Somebody make a new candle or something! Well, Paul went inside and I decided to brave staying in the van with the kiddos. Little did I know that two hours later my hubsters would still be in there! So after an hour and a half of good chillins and thirty minutes of crying chillins, we went in. And found out a big shocker: it turned out that our lumber company that we were going to be using went bankrupt!! And we didn't even know! Yikes!! So, we found our new lumber company:) The Lord knew:) As always!<br /><br />After the two hours there (Paul going over our plans and specifications with the owner) we went and picked up all the food for the lunches I am going to be making the men who are doing our foundation.<br />Paul and I decided on a few things that hopefully I will post later (because we still have to talk to the peeps involved) and came up with the money we needed to make it happen. So, that, people, is how I have lost several million brain cells. Too much thinking. Some not so awesome stuff happening (coming up with more money; lumber company shutting down) to some pretty awesome stuff (the Lord providing ways for more money; and a new, less expensive lumber company). Why do we not even trust the Lord...He works everything out. Now, please remind me of this tomorrow and the next day and the rest of the year when there are other things that go wrong:)!!!<br /><br />Tomorrow we are squaring up where we are going to be putting the house. Pray all goes well. I'll be taking pics and posting! Yay! And I'll be posting some more idea pictures...just can't help it:)<br /><br />Btw, the RED SIDING WON!!!! YES! I was hoping it would:) That's what we'll be using! Thank you for voting:) Now, please vote in this next poll. Even though we won't be finishing the upstairs until a few years down the road, we still have to know where we will put which rooms and what kind of rooms to have (for plumbing and electricity sake). So, help me, please:) :) :)<br /><br />On to build,<br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-17392201289670045242010-07-27T10:10:00.000-07:002010-07-28T13:42:04.067-07:00My Faves!As much as I love the building phase~seeing all the new things done to our land~I love the furnishing phase more:) Picking out the colors, flooring, lighting, decorating things and ideas!! If I had a hobby it would be this:) Furnishing my home:)<br /><br />Honestly my tastes have changed soooo much over the last five years. I have gone through an Americana phase; a shabby chic phase; a rustic cabin phase; a minimalist phase; you name it, I've liked it:) It made birthday gifts interesting to say the least. Every year it was different! I just couldn't make up my mind!! Oh my goodness! Anyways, my hubby and I have decided to look back and see what stayed the same through all those themes and use that as our base for decorating. So, here is our "theme":<br /><br />Light colors (paint, furnishings, fabrics)<br /><br />Mixture of light and darks woods<br /><br />Antique materials (furniture!, fabrics)<br /><br />Some modern elements (lighting, pictures)<br /><br /><br />So, I don't think there's a name for my theme. You can try to name it for me. Maybe I'll start a new trend! :) haha.<br /><br />So, during a slow week I will be posting pictures of my ideas, favorite furnitures, lights, paint colors, rooms, etc. I'll be doing a blog or two a week of these (only on slow weeks) and you can look back to see my new pictures I've posted. Let me know what ideas you've seen or that you like. Maybe things that you absolutely LOVE about your house (or hate!). Layouts you love; rooms you couldn't live without; storage solutions (my downfall); or anything else you can think of! I need all the help I can get:)<br /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 258px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499052138146477490" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-ObG2Y16170Qo3uflxWZDmYG915eCPtdPBx2wdn70ES2I2zwH3LJcO0RBTVoxVGJMAf9LC2G10SMGlKMfWjnvPaUzd6A6SiZ3Dibeg4VrsGiB2cuDvtwADpe-7FMeLTMB_6sc4aYb9Q04/s320/alphabetanimals_inuse%5B1%5D.jpg" /><br />These are from wallnutz.com. Love them! Will put these in the playroom/homeschool room:) That's a lot of sticking!<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 251px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499052139011207474" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBZlH6nb__0-7TKQHAMKC68WIpJlgN9q7nqXSSxs_pSIul7fVZ-TG-UD9ceo4Z4Kf8RRYFN7kCbOT8FFkZogm4eSO7PddpLjzoOo6ZoVh6KqaGfqFgJoMdGTwZkkbDkwVGwOpWwe3-0eh6/s320/markolsonphoto%5B1%5D.jpg" />Will definitely be using black chalkboard paint. Just can't decide if I want it in the kitchen or the playroom or maybe both!<br /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499052131341712498" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK4jKhy6VhZA34MEriXJL2f3whEo8sjFtqv9JVkJUUkmq2zwoYou9-Mj0MsHqHbiXl0iJMKErZr2eqCtIDdmaHlitD6tIBwzShZStantRL8wM4417SeDtwiX5MlT91UVcN9AFrgn18HzzT/s320/0093764_PE231357_S4%5B1%5D.jpg" />IKEA pendant light...totally awesome and SOOOO cheap! LOVE LOVE LOVE these!!!!<br /><br /><br />And for wood flooring we are seriously considering buying ours online at simplefloors.com. They have amazing reviews, really great shipping costs and an awesome selection of flooring. We calculated what it would cost to buy and on a really good sale it's 2/3 less than Lowe's!! Here's the link to the flooring we are thinking about. Brazilian Teak, hardwood planks. We like the lighter wood because it shows dirt a lot less (thanks for the hint, Kaci!)<br /><br /><a href="http://simplefloors.com/products/Exotic-Flooring/Vintage-Couture-/Brazilian-Teak/flooring396.aspx">http://simplefloors.com/products/Exotic-Flooring/Vintage-Couture-/Brazilian-Teak/flooring396.aspx</a><br /><br />Hope you enjoy my faves and don't forget to comment and let me know some of your faves too! I would love to see what you suggest!!<br /><br />And also, check out my new link at the top right hand side of the page: it's my idea book from houzz.com...that place is totally awesome!!!<br /><br />On to build,<br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-62994363875954942272010-07-26T20:19:00.000-07:002010-07-26T22:02:12.270-07:00The Grounds...pt. 2<div><div><div><div>Sooooo, here's the second part of our preliminaries! </div><div><br /><br /></div><div>Well, I left off with picking out our sub contractors. That was actually a fun experience. Now that we had our materials list and quotes from subs we were armed and ready to meet with our banker lady, Katherine. She is totally the sweetest lady and has been great with answering our numerous phone calls and staying late so that my hard working hubby can come with me to talk to her. ( I do not like to do stuff like that by myself...who does?) So, Wednesday, June 30th was the fateful day...the day we signed our life away to the Bank of Cadiz...and all to own our own home! Is it worth it?? OH YEAH! :) Honestly, I couldn't stop smiling while we were signing the papers! My hubby, on the other hand, couldn't stop groaning. :)</div><div><br /><br /></div><div>Well, with the loan under our belt, we were ready to begin the building process. The first step?</div><div>Calling Mack Brame. Remember? He's our Septic Man. Before we could do anything he had to get the septic permit from Health Department. This allowed us to get the water meter. The water meter is the main valve that runs from the main water line to our own personal water line? Lost? Yeah, me too:) Simply put: the water meter is the tracker that counts how many gallons of water we use, therefore we now have a water bill! Exciting! haha. It took about two weeks for the meter to be set.</div><div><br /><div> </div></div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 241px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 195px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439763666546562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9CLQgF9yxtoUJiZEiukQLcjl2v4OQ-i5JEziT6Av9rs1m6qU_t1h19YdT7xgd4A3I8BfCVEPDCpOgFLEiYxwDWyIk_ALZeyEmmlk0Yuf6BEGqJ5RgkXmplOJ-s-yGbgY0mA0l2PasyiUu/s320/100_1484.JPG" /></div><div> the water meter<br /><br /><br /></div><div>Secondly, (and this was all happening around the same time) we had to get the city electrician, Tim Tucker, out to tell us where to put our temporary electric pole. The pole is exactly what it sounds like: it's a temporary pole that has a whole bunch of plugs and electrical outlets and stuff for all the contractors/builders who need to charge their tool batteries. When we are done building it will be taken off. When he found the perfect spot for it (in front of our lot), he staked it and we called our electrican, Mike Fort, and he came out and put up the pole. So that was the first obvious sign that something was done on our land. I'm telling you, I almost kissed it!! Here's the picture of it. </div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439774271721858" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIpMZqW4MigMyzimpm_8CaE8oNSU_j6KcTWV2kXYddZpN6YqByT98PKBGcRoTCyWQ48TgBAGCwARGxB4JyTY4npS3lP67lCDqW7naI2GHVOZnuoZ1CYcKKz9umCU2_tLiZaGQ5RcJcezu0/s320/100_1490.JPG" /> temporary electric pole<br /><br /><div>The next thing was to get our electric poles on our land, so that we can actually have electricity. There were a few setbacks but they everything worked out! Praise the Lord. All in all there were six poles set on our land. Three in front and then three leading back to our lot.</div><div> </div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439781440956562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnzX4POCvgsGrdYB8AXLDFlYgic2EnWF6JPk0HO2t5C6ZC5YQIUbqdy5BV8h9erDHMd0AKHXZseDMKOT2ETjN9k-Tenj7JCeJqtJYFS7KzFq6lN0Ng9LOMu8k5p-pKyrAK49p-zkxuUTG5/s320/100_1480.JPG" /> electric pole (1 of 6; this is on the front of our property)</div><br /><br /><div>Once the electric was in we called Gibson Plumbing and Mr. Gibson came out the next day (which was this past Saturday) and dug our water line and put in the line...and at the end of the line, he put a spigot! With flowing water:) I took a video to remember that moment! Paul wouldn't let me run the water too long...you know, with our new utility bill and all :) But it was pretty cool. :) here are those pictures.</div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439799888663186" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7cdrgRKjGd3fIRHKlz2JqBLSGmmapZnSRmNjmM87pQ0hwVPWl1gmx4aYw0eDEh_RGVSF4esgA9XDVzCMpXOsHn65ql5OuxvvSBIftuspDIf4PWakMpxH4-N97fHP7T1LY2nxknbRUOJba/s320/100_1526.JPG" /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439799888663186" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7cdrgRKjGd3fIRHKlz2JqBLSGmmapZnSRmNjmM87pQ0hwVPWl1gmx4aYw0eDEh_RGVSF4esgA9XDVzCMpXOsHn65ql5OuxvvSBIftuspDIf4PWakMpxH4-N97fHP7T1LY2nxknbRUOJba/s320/100_1526.JPG" /><br /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498439788423698738" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPRZLjb2wBg8PdWDvemKRiWAFbXeEyqBB4c6y_-loBukViAJCZSfxONgG0-qIu311sH7s_-cWClxKc-jm47_E0tL7WXlunqftEbVHmVJSEBEB5RI99jISAji5Vrzy_y_V8NOX-_hNEJYk/s320/100_1525.JPG" /> water line (and yes, it has been officially approved!)</div><div> </div><div>(sorry I have two pics of our spigot:))<br /><br /><div></div><br /><div>Well, that is the happenings of the time! And here's proof! Doesn't Paul look so happy...hehe <div><span style="color:#990000;"></span> </div><div><span style="color:#990000;"></span> </div><div>Well, this may look easy and simple, but there were probably 200-300 man hours of work that we put in before we could actually sign the loan. I'll give you a rundown:</div><div> </div><div>First of all, we needed to get a material's list. That sounds simple enough...NOT!!! This involved TONS of searching the internet at the beginning, because frankly, I didn't even know what a material's list meant. I thought it meant, you know like how many toilets you wanted and what kind of light fixtures would be used. Searching for that kind of stuff was fun...I mean, I found the coolest pendants from IKEA! But no, a material's list is everything from floor joists, to termite protection, to sheetrock nails, to subflooring, to studs, to shingles...EVERYTHING! And I am SOO glad Paul was there to help. I really tried while he was working to shoulder this responsibility. But I couldn't do everything. Hubby finally got frustrated enough with my efforts to tackle the job:) </div><div><br />A material's list is simply two steps: </div><div> </div><div>First get what you need to build the house and get all the prices of those things.</div><div>Then get the quotes from subcontractors.</div><div> </div><div>That will give you a cost estimate of what you will need to build your home. Keep in mind that this is an ESTIMATE!!! There will be a whole lot of added fees, but that is for later.</div><div> </div><div>Here are two great sites that helped me realize all the things that go into building:</div><div> </div><div><a href="http://www.build-yourown-home.com/">http://www.build-yourown-home.com/</a></div><div> </div><div><a href="http://www.ownerbuilder.com/">http://www.ownerbuilder.com/</a></div><div> </div><div>I did call Lowe's and they were zero help:</div><div> </div><div>Me: "I'd like to see if you could compile a material's list for me. I had heard that you do that for those who are building a home."</div><div>Them: "We don't do that anymore...it just got too difficult. But you are more than welcome to compile one for yourself. All you have to do is write down everything you need times the amount you need and multiply that by the price and there! You have your list!"</div><div> </div><div>Haha, that's pretty funny, Lowe's peeps! "No, thank you" in my kindest voice possible :) So, I went to two local lumber companies and they were happy to oblige my request...go locals! With two material lists in hand I was now ready to get quotes from subcontractors. I actually did all this work by myself! I called the Health Department to find out a good Septic guy; I called three contractors to see who they used for Plumbing and Electric; and I used references from those two lumber companies also. Long story short, I think I've found the best guys in the business!! Here they are:</div><div> </div><div>Gibson Plumbing</div><div>Mack Brame Septic</div><div>King and Hester HVAC</div><div>Means and Fort Electric</div><div> </div><div>(my amazing, wonderful, marvelous hubby will be doing nearly everything else!)</div><div> </div><div>Top of the line and actually the least expensive quotes than the other folks I called.</div><div> </div><div>After making several (and I mean several) phone calls to ensure everything was covered in the quotes I compiled the list and showed them to hubby...and he approved all my hard work! This took a week and a half, btw! They were all so sweet and nice to this girl who had no clue what a 14 SEER was (which has something to do with a better HVAC system, I think), and who barely knew what recessed lighting was. But, now I do! hehe And btw, did you know that your electrician will put in up to 20 recessed lights for free with the package... I thought that was kind of cool, though we'll be having more than 20. And you have to get the package. Obviously they are not just gonna come to your house to and put in 20 recessed lights for free! lol. But anyways, if you end up building your own home, this if for you! :)</div><div> </div><div>Well, that's the first part of like three parts! I better stop before I make this too long. :) I will keep posting pictures, if I can find a way to post more than one picture at a time. Ha, this blog is good at stumping me:)</div><div> </div><div>Have a good night, y'all...see you tomorrow!</div><div> </div><div>On to build,</div><div> </div><div>Rachael</div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div>A Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7614675063907883663.post-6125806176734428972010-07-24T22:02:00.000-07:002010-07-24T22:33:46.823-07:00Let's Start at the Very Beginning...The biggest reason I have started this blog is to help me remember this amazing (and yes, difficult) thing we have undertaken. Building our home...<br /><br />It's for you to read and enjoy...<br /><br />Look at the pictures. We have started from "scratch". Just ten acres of beautiful Western Kentucky property with no electricity or water. Just a phone line! Ha! And not even DSL with that! My awesome man is the GC (General Contractor) of this project. He has experience~Yay! So in addition to it costing less to build, I will also be able to tell him what I don't like and not even feel bad about it:) Just kidding! This project has been nearly two years in the making. I will start from the beginning and show you how the Lord has answered amazing and specific prayers and how he has opened and shut doors.<br /><br />So first, the land...<br /><br />When we found out we were moving to Kentucky (and "found out" is not exactly the perfect phrase) the first thing we were looking for was a house with acreage. Paul and I both LOVE the country life and all that comes with it: land for kiddos to run on, a place for a garden, seclusion, room to expand and build, etc. So we knew the city life was not for us! Thankfully, my dad's church has a great realtor who began to look for properties while we were still traveling. We were always getting emails from him with houses for sale. None really stuck in our mind. There was one we looked at a couple of times but the price tag was too out of our range, so...<br /><br />We told him to narrow it down to just land. No homes on it. The good thing is, land in KY is pretty inexpensive! The bad thing is most of the pretty places were miles and miles away from civilization. NOT good for me! As much as I love country life, please don't take me away from my places to shop:) hehe. Not too long after we told him that, he found our future piece of land! Ten acres of amazing woods with a small meadow in the front. We went to look at it and Paul and I instantly fell in love! He knew deer would be plentiful for his hunting hobby and I knew it would be the perfect place to raise our family. And the best part? The price tag was only $35,000!!!!! A steal of a deal. Paul and I mulled and prayed and thought and prayed. We finally decided that we would offer the owner $8,000 less than his offer and if he tried to counter bid the highest we would go was $29,000. We gave him our offer and our realtor called within a couple of hours to let us know that the man had accepted our bid!!!! Talk about a specific answer to prayer! Praise the LORD!! God is sooo good to us:) That was in November of 2008...it has taken this long to finally begin building our dream home!<br /><br />We cleared about an acre right away about 200 feet back from the road with a long curvy driveway (!) with help from a Christian man...long story that I won't go into. I know that's what blogs are for, but it would be unnecessary and would only give me a reason to complain, which frankly, I don't need! We did the perc test, which is a test to see if the soil is right for a septic system, put gravel on our drive and laid a drain tile. But other than that, nothing was done until about three weeks ago! :) I look back and can't believe I waited this long.<br /><br />And I'l let you know, when I say nothing was done...I mean nothing was done to the land. Believe me, I had plans drawn up. By a construction friend, and then later revised by myself. I pored over magazines and books and websites looking for the perfect floorplan, materials, furnishings, etc. The Lord knew I needed that time to get in my head what would be perfect for my family as far as the layout of the house would be. I can't wait until you see my plan! I am going to try to scan it and post so you can see:) Yay!!!!<br /><br />Well, this is it for now:) A lot has happened in the last three weeks, that I will be writing about soon. I will also be posting pics going from start to finish of our house. Let me tell you, the first few pictures will be "boring". To you anyways, not to me ! :) And also, my blog page will be changing. Check out the links I'll be putting up. They have been a great source of ideas for me. Notice the countdown and the pics I'll be changing around.<br /><br />Thank you for reading and for being interested in my life:) You all are pretty awesome!<br /><br />On to build,<br /><br />RachaelA Project of a Lifetime...http://www.blogger.com/profile/17980163361042020898noreply@blogger.com2
